Xbox will reportedly be releasing a limited edition controller to coincide with the release of Gears of War: E-Day.
Dealabs writer billbil-kun – who has a lengthy track record of accurately leaking hardware and software, including numerous previous reports on Xbox controllers – says they’ve seen the controller and describes it as “beautiful”.
According to the insider, the controller, which will be titled the Storm King, will have a design based around the Gears of War logo.
The controller is expected to cost $89.99 / €89.99 / £84.99, which is the same price as the limited edition Xbox controller released for Forza Horizon 6.
While a release date isn’t yet known, billbil-kun says an official announcement “seems imminent”, and is expected within the next two weeks at the latest.
When previously reporting on unannounced controllers, the insider usually doesn’t release images of the hardware in question. This is the case here too, though they did provide a detailed description of the Storm King controller, saying the design “blew us away”.
The controller’s shell will reportedly consist of “cracked black and red textures, reminiscent of fissured volcanic rock”. The left stick is a basic black colour, while the central section of buttons – the D-Pad, Xbox button and View, Menu and Share buttons – are all blood red, with “a red gear housing the iconic Gears of War logo” encircling them.
The right stick and X button are also blood red, while the A, B and Y buttons are black, creating what billbil-kun says is “a stark contrast between the two halves of the controller”.
The leaker says the controller “displays the same attention to detail as the limited edition Doom controller , with the ability to integrate the visual identity of a franchise into every aspect of the design, without ever resorting to superficial gimmicks”.
Xbox’s last major limited edition controller was its Forza Horizon 6 controller, which was released on May 19 and was described as “one of the most vibrant controllers Xbox has ever released”.
An early access Open Beta for Gears of War: E-Day starts today and runs until August 10. This beta is only open to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers, and players who pre-owned the game. A second Open Beta available to all players will launch later this month.
