Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s executive VP for Windows and Devices who recently castigated LG for dumping non-Microsoft pop up advertising on Windows machines, now has posted some details on promised improvements to Windows 11. There are ironic ones, such as removing promotional content from web results when you search your computer locally; that’s not an improvement as much as it is removing a feature no one wanted. That’s been a theme for Windows 11 for a while now, with the majority of improvements to applications like Notepad and Paint have been removing AI features we never wanted in the first place.
There will also be substantial improvements in memory efficiency and latency, but no actual date was given for when Windows 11 will see it’s memory footprint reduced. If you are curious as to why Microsoft is suddenly admitting that Windows 11 memory management is horrendous, you haven’t been paying attention to the price of flash chips. The personal computer industry has seen plummeting sales thanks to the obscene price increases of RAM and SSDs driving the price of new systems beyond the budget of many people. That is why Microsoft is now trying to reduce the amount of RAM needed for an acceptable level of performance on a Windows 11 machine, not out of the kindness of their hearts.
