The latest firmware update is rolling out for PlayStation 5 owners who are part of the console’s Beta Programme.
According to Sony, the new update is mainly focused at PlayStation 5 Pro owners, and applies its improved PSSR 2.0 upscaling to all games that support PSSR by default.
The original version of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) first launched in November 2024 as a key feature of the PS5 Pro, offering AI upscaling for a selection of PS5 games.
Response to the upscaling tech was mixed, however, with some players reporting issues with how the PSSR upscaling worked on games like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Silent Hill 2 and Alan Wake 2, suggesting they looked worse than the base console.
An improved version 2.0 of PSSR launched in March 2026 to coincide with the release of Resident Evil Requiem, and has been applied to a number of games since then.
Given that over 100 games supported the original version of PSSR, however, not all of them have had the updated PSSR 2.0 officially applied. To cater for this, Sony added a feature to PS5 Pro in March which overrides PSSR with PSSR 2.0, even if a game doesn’t natively support version 2.0.
To activate this, players had to go into their system settings, go to the Screen and Video section, then choose Video Output and enable a setting called Enhance PSSR Image Quality.
The latest firmware update, which PS5 Beta Programme users are currently in the process of getting, now turns this option on by default, meaning players who weren’t aware of the setting will now see a visual upgrade in any PSSR 1.0 games they own.
Also new in the latest preview firmware is the option to turn off Bluetooth connections. On paper, this appears to be a pointless option because this stops players being able to put their console in Rest Mode and also turns off HDMI link.
Sony notes, however, that the option is specifically aimed at esports venues and similar locations which have problems connecting controllers when a number of consoles are around. “Do not use this feature for any other purpose,” it suggests.
