It Doesn’t Get Security Updates Anymore, And Yet …
Owners of the original Chromecast have run into a few issues lately, as Alphabet is not overly excited about maintaining that piece of 12 year old legacy hardware. The most recent issue was last week, when many Chromecast owners suddenly found their stick no longer connecting to the vast majority of streaming services. Thankfully they all quickly came back, so it was not the final demise of those first gen Chromecasts.
Google stated it was a technical issue which temporarily disabled the streaming stick, not a purposeful bricking of the device. That may even be accurate, and it was totally unintentional and not a test to see how much negative publicity turning off those ancient Chromecasts caused. The devices are all back in action, but users might want to think about alternatives. That particular Chromecast model stopped getting updates in 2022 and any issues you might run into are your own to figure out.
It might be time to think about trying to find an old Raspberry Pi and setting up FCast or NymphCast; too bad the Pi is suffering the same price increases all PC hardware are affected by.
