Ubisoft has announced a free update for Ghost Recon Wildlands, adding improved visuals as well as new and returning content.
The Last Rites update is available today, and allows PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC players to play the game in 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, as well as other graphical improvements.
It also includes a new story mission with a “mysterious new threat” in the form of a masked female villain called La Llorana. A teaser trailer for the mission shows her preparing to remove her mask, but the footage ends just before her face is revealed.
“She’s a complex antagonist,” creative director Olivier Leonardi said during the Ghost Recon 25th anniversary presentation. “She’s far removed from your typical villains mould.
“We wrote quite a dark backstory for her – she’s on the path to redemption, but she’s also on a mission to take revenge on the people who caused her suffering, starting with the cartels, the CIA and ultimately La Unidad.”
The free update also reinstates the game’s Predator mission, which was originally introduced in December 2017 as part of a bonus mission called The Jungle Moved.
The mission was removed three years later, in December 2020, when Ubisoft‘s licensing deal for the use of the character ended. Now, after nearly six years, it’s been added back into the game for players who missed it the first time around.
The game also receives a wide range of new gameplay customisation options with the new update, allowing players to adjust numerous parameters to make the game as realistic as they want in all PvE modes.
This includes the authentic reloading, friendly fire and choice between 1-2 weapons from the Ghost mode, as well as the ability to set the time of day and weather, and tweak various difficulty presets.
Players can also turn off a number of visual indicators, such as the glow on highlighted items, the preview of where throwable items will land, and sounds tied to hidden UI elements (like the detection meter), to make it more realistic.
As well as the new mission, improved visuals and returning Predator content, the Last Rites update now makes hundreds of in-game items available for free, “including no longer obtainable rewards, unreleased camos, items that were previously exclusive to the Mercenaries mode, new 25th anniversary items and more”.
PlayStation Plus subscribers also get exclusive access to some new Last Rites related items, based on the look of the new mission’s masked villain.
