Critically acclaimed indie platformer Knytt has received a new 20th anniversary edition, entirely free of charge.
Knytt was originally released back in 2006 by Swedish indie developer Nifflas, as a freeware game for PC. The game has players controlling the titular Knytt as he tries to find the missing parts of his crashed ship so he can repair it and return to his home planet.
The game was praised at the time of its release, and eventually led to the sequels Knytt Stories and Knytt Underground, the latter of which was a much larger game with a paid PC and console release.
Now the original game has been re-released by developer Bit Kid as Knytt Classic, a special 20th anniversary edition with new quality of life features and extra modes.
Knytt Classic – which is available now on Steam and is entirely free of charge with no microtransactions, like the original version – is a “pixel perfect port” of the 2006 game designed to work on modern Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck devices.
The port offers full controller support and remappable controls, as well as the addition of Steam achievements and other new hidden bonuses.
Multiple aspect ratios are also now supported, as well as a number of display effects including retro CRT and handheld LCD visual styles.
New modes have been added too, including a new UltraTough mode created by Bit Kid, a remixed world by Brutally Unfair, and an extra hard mode called Knytt XH, designed by Babe is You developer Hempuli.
An optional in-game timer and fastest completion time tracking has also been added for those who want to try speedrunning the game.
