Capcom has another hit on its hands as Onimusha sells 1 million in a day

Capcom appears to have yet another hit on its hands, after Onimusha: Way of the Sword sales surpassed one million units on its first day of release, according to the company.

Way of the Sword is the first full Onimusha entry in 20 years, starring the late actor Toshiro Mifune as protagonist Miyamoto Musashi, as he battles through a dark fantasy version of Kyoto during the Edo period, defeating demons and supernatural threats.

The new game’s 24-hour sales momentum means Way of the Sword is already halfway to surpassing the previous best-selling entry in the Onimusha series, 2002’s Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny (2.1 million sales).

It also continues Capcom’s strong momentum of hits. Earlier this year, it released new IP Pragmata and sold 2 million copies in two days. In February, Resident Evil Requiem sales surpassed 5 million in a week – its biggest launch ever.

The company has been on a run of healthy financial reports, due to a combination of a steady string of well-received new releases and regular discounts leading to continued sales of older games from its catalog.

Capcom’s latest financial report for Q1 of its current financial year – which covers April 1 to June 30, 2026 – says revenue and profit were driven up year-on-year thanks to sales of new releases like Pragmata as well as catalog titles including the Resident Evil series.

Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto recently claimed that the company’s continued success in recent years is down to a switch in focus from auteur-led to team-led development.

“In the game industry, when a title becomes a series, it often ends up depending heavily on a particular developer, becoming what you’d call an individual-driven title,” he explained (as translated by Automaton).

“If that person doesn’t make one, there’s no next instalment. The direction of the series becomes tied to the ideas of a single creator.”
