NVIDIA And AMD Are Both Looking To Bring Rust To The GPU
It seems counterintuitive to want to bring Rust close to metal but that is exactly what the next revolution in GPU processing will entail. AMD has posted a rather lucrative job opening for someone who is a qualified Rust Software Development Engineer. AMD and NVIDIA both see this general purpose language as being perfect for making the next generation of GPUs for HPC and LLM usage, not just because of it’s flexibility and speed but also thanks to it’s focus on memory safety.
This is a bit of a daunting task as Rust hasn’t previously been used for low-level GPU software design. As the two major players in the GPU market, and presumably Intel as well, are looking to hire talented Rust developers for their next generation of software it must be a good fit. About the only example we have is NVIDIA’s Nova Linux kernel driver which they hope will replace the current Nouveau drivers most distros use.
We can hope this spills over into gaming GPU drivers, but unfortunately we are merely an afterthought now; we simply don’t spend as much as large enterprises convinced they have to put AI in everything … even if their customers don’t want it and the AI software development companies are hemorrhaging money.
