Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have confirmed that their Koei Tecmo-partnered Switch 2 exclusive, Pokopia, has sold more than 5 million copies since its release in March.
That means that, in just five months, the life sim game has been purchased by 21% of Nintendo Switch 2’s 23.68 million installed base.
That also places Pokémon Pokopia as the second-best-selling Switch 2 game, behind Mario Kart World’s 15 million sales (although that title was bundled with the console at launch), and ahead of Donkey Kong Bananza’s 4.78 million sales.
The 5 million sales mean that Pokopia is already one of the best-selling Pokémon series spin-offs ever, but it also represents a huge success for developer Koei Tecmo, which has likely seen few hits of this size in its history.
Pokopia was mainly developed by Koei Tecmo’s Omega Force team, led by the directors behind the sandbox game Dragon Quest Builders 2.
Notably, Pokémon Pokopia was released as a Game Key Card, which is essentially a digital download code on a physical game card.
In Pokopia, players control a Ditto that takes on the appearance of a human. As this humanoid Ditto, the player will befriend other Pokémon and use their abilities to rebuild an island.
A free update and paid expansion were recently released for Pokopia, with a second expansion due in late 2026, and a third and final expansion in 2027.
VGC’s Pokémon Pokopia review calls it “Pokémon’s best spin-off”, noting that the need to grind late in the game “can’t dull the shine” of the overall experience.
“Pokémon Pokopia is an excellent life simulation game that takes the best bits from the champions of the genre and evolves into something that Pokémon fans and cozy game fans will love,” we wrote. “Late-game grinding doesn’t dull an adventure that’s as full of discovery at 100 hours as it was at one.”
