Looking for a fun unique way to stylize your Mac experience, and also to make it easier to differentiate which windows are which? Window Sweaters might be for you.
Window Sweater is a whimsical little app that wraps your MacOS windows in virtual sweater knitting, with each app window getting its own distinct color and sweater design. This offers not only a fun visual customization to your Mac, but provides for an incredibly creative way to determine which window is which, an issue that some Mac users have lamented about with the newer flat interface designs.
Window Sweater is a free download from Github, thanks to developer @SaraGordic.
Download the app and then toss it into your /Applications folder and launch it. GateKeeper will probably block the app because Window Sweaters is not signed by Apple, you’ll need to bypass Gatekeeper to open it via System Settings → Privacy & Security → “Open Anyway” (unless you already allow apps opening from anywhere).
As soon as you launch the app, your windows will instantly get little sweaters around them, and you’ll have a new menu bar item where you can customize the Window Sweaters experience.
Window Sweaters is amusingly customizable, with varying options for different patterns, sweater border size, and knit stitch size, so customize to your hearts desire.
This is a super fun little app and it’s arriving just in time for the fall and winter season, so put some cozy snug knit sweaters on your windows and enjoy!

While there’s the obviously enjoyable playful aspect to this little app, Window Sweaters also addresses a UI/UX issue that some Mac users have complained about where it can be difficult to differentiate windows from one another. Those complaints and frustrations led to apps like Alan, HazeOver, and Tinkle gaining popularity. But aside from HazeOver, none of those are particularly attractive… but Window Sweaters sure is! Who needs Alan or HazeOver or similar tools when you can make your Mac windows stand out with distinct colorful cozy Window Sweaters?
