We haven’t been complaining about RAM prices quite as much on the podcast lately as we had been, but our negativity remains strong. It’s just human nature to accept our fate as time passes and there is no chance of a return to the RAM prices of old. At least, that’s what the SK hynix CEO seems to be indicating when he says that the memory shortage will continue through 2030 now. Not wishful thinking at all.
From a report by Reuters as sourced by TechPowerUp., the previous prediction by SK Hynix CEO CEO Kwak Noh-Jung of a commodity DRAM shortage through 2028 was apparently premature. Now “the company expects a current memory chip shortage to persist through the end of 2030”. Besides, they need to get their new Indiana plant up and running for HBM4E production by Q3 2029!
This editor has only one question:
Do enthusiasts like us have any influence left? Are the paltry numbers we represent – compared to datacenter customers, that is – enough to affect anything is we refuse to buy at inflated prices? Big companies really don’t seem to care how much they have to pay. It’s a hopeless situation. For crying out loud the #1 best selling 32GB DDR5 kit on Newegg is $489.99, and now the consensus seems to be that 16GB is “enough” for a Windows 11 gaming rig?!
