A Decade Of Updates And Still Going
The vast majority of IoT devices, from webcams to toasters get abandoned a few years after their release and often without any notification to the owners of the devices. This means that those devices very quickly become a huge security risk to you as the lack of updates mean that any new vulnerabilities will never be patched. This could lead to anything from the devices sharing your personal data to being drafted into a huge botnet.
Samsung and Google only agreed to provide at least seven years of security updates to their devices but they are the exception. NVIDIA has had them all beat since the inception of their Shield line of set top boxes and console like thingys. The first Shield Android TV was released in 2015 and it is still getting updates to this day.
This is the way.
NVIDIA’s take on updates should be considered the standard for IoT devices. smartphones and any other smart devices. It would ensure that your devices aren’t spying on you, or at least won’t for long as the vulnerability will be patched. It won’t help devices sold by companies which permanently shutter their doors, but that is just yet another reason that the Right to Repair movement needs to succeed.
Kudos to NVIDIA for being the most responsible provider of these types of devices.!
