The United States is through to the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0.
After his first goal was ruled offside, Folarin Balogun responded just minutes later with a brilliant left-footed finish to give the United States a 1-0 lead just before halftime. It was his third goal of the tournament, making him just the fifth American to score three career World Cup goals, joining Landon Donovan, Bert Patenaude, Clint Dempsey and Brian McBride.
In the second half, however, things got dicey.
Balogun was sent off with a red card in the 64th minute. The U.S. managed to hold on with 10 men before Malik Tillman’s beautiful free-kick goal sealed the victory, but the sending off came at a major cost.
Balogun, the Americans’ star striker, will now miss the Round of 16.
The U.S. will face Belgium in the Round of 16 at Seattle Stadium on July 6. Belgium advanced after its historic comeback win over Senegal, in which it scored two goals in a three-minute span to overcome a 2-0 deficit in the 85th minute.
With that showdown now set, here are the updated odds for how the USA will fare in this year’s tournament at FanDuel Sportsbook as of July 3.

USA defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup (Getty Images).
The victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina marked a historic milestone for the United States. It was just the nation’s second-ever knockout stage win at a men’s World Cup, with the only previous victory coming against Mexico in the Round of 16 in 2002, a tournament in which the Americans reached the quarterfinals.
It also marked the first time in U.S. history that the team has won three matches at a single World Cup.
So, how do these results stack up against previous results? Well, at the 2022 World Cup, the USA made it to the Round of 16, which was viewed as a stellar accomplishment prior to the tournament’s expansion.
In 2018, the USA did not qualify for the World Cup, and in 2014 and 2010, the U.S. also made it to the Round of 16. Their best result this century occurred in 2002, when the Americans made it all the way to the quarterfinals before being eliminated.
